  Раздел теоретической физики, в котором изучаются свойства и поведение макроскопических физических тел, состоящих из очень большого числа атомов, молекул, заряженных частиц (ионов, электронов) или квантов излучения (фотонов). К таким телам (или системам) относятся газы, жидкие и твердые тела, ионизованный газ (плазма), световое излучение и даже молекулы, состоящие из достаточно большого числа атомов (или ядра атомов тяжелых химических элементов, образованные из большого числа нуклонов).
