  Наука и раздел техники, изучающие генерацию, управление и детектирование фотонов. На начальном этапе развития фотоника использовала видимый (длина волны света от 400 до 800 нм) и ближний инфракрасный (длина волны 800 нм — 10 мкм) диапазоны спектра. С развитием методик генерации света, появлением новых типов модуляторов света (электрооптических, акустооптических и др.), а также с развитием полупроводниковой техники, фотоника использует свет с длиной волны от ближнего ультрафиолетового (200 нм) до терагерцового диапазонов (75-150 мкм или 2-4 ТГц).
