Искусственно созданная электропроводящая система на границе раздела двух плохо проводящих сред, например, вакуум — диэлектрик, полупроводник — диэлектрик. Простейший двумерный проводник — слой электронов, удерживаемых над поверхностью диэлектрика (например, жидкого Не) силами электростатического изображения (электроны поляризуют диэлектрик и притягиваются к нему), а также внешним постоянным электрическим полем, приложенным перпендикулярно поверхности диэлектрика. Аналогично в гетероструктурах (например, на основе GaAs) и у поверхности полупроводников (Si, Ge, InSb и др.) образуется двумерный слой с избыточной концентрацией носителей заряда.
