Наиболее широко используемый метод, Интенсивной Пластической Деформации. Образец, имеющий форму прутка круглого или квадратного сечения, прессуется в матрице через сопрягающиеся под определенным углом каналы. Деформация сдвигом происходит, когда заготовка проходит через зону их пересечения. В процессе многократно повторяющихся прессований в заготовке накапливается деформация сдвигом, что в результате приводит к образованию в материале ультрамелкозернистой структуры.
